Voodoo Plant

Description

There really is a plant called the "voodoo plant"; I first became aware of it in the mid-1970's at the Chicago Flower Show (most properly, it's called Voodoo Lily, Dracunculus vulgaris, producing the largest lily flower you've ever seen after starting with a plant kinda sorta like the one here).

Apart from horticulture, in the actual lore of voodoo shells (more properly cat's eye or Cowrie shells) were used for divination; in Haitian voudou, skulls are regarded in the sense of magical relics with wonderous powers, similar to relics in the history of Catholicism. Lastly, the colors in clothing for voodoo dolls have meanings; the red in this image's center would mean power, love, energy, passion; the green in bottom leaves would represent money, wealth, abundance, prosperity, luck, health, rebirth; and the brown in top leaves would indicate doubt, indecision, and uncertainty...perhaps about how to go "green" in today's economic climates.

Some of my fractals attempt to address mythology of the Abrahamic faiths, ancient Greece, and ancient Egypt; this one attempts to be surrealism referencing one of the oldest religions in Africa and the Caribbean. Created in JWildfire 2.50R2, converted in the GIMP for dA upload.
