Pandora's Box

According to Hesiod again, Pandora (the first woman created by the Grecian gods) out of curiosity opened a box (some say jar) that contained only the myriad woes of humanity, allowing them to escape forever before their containing box was closed...with only the cure for such things, hope, getting stuck inside.

The box is symbolized in the center, surrounded by images of all the major woes of history; egregious personal or social pro domina, cliques and armies marching in circles with jagged determination against all they meet but with no general goal, forms of decay, ignorance, want and blight that often follow in their wake; inside the box remains the eye of hope, blinded by its own brilliance, numbed by its constraint and own inability to be seen.
